It is undeniable that any person who studies the modern history of Bahrain, especially the period between the end of the nineteenth century and post mid twentieth century which saw the rise of the National Union Organisation (NUO), would agree that this history represented the confluence between the notions of struggle for reform and democracy, the need for progress, the emancipation from backwardness and the hegemony of British colonialism.
Therefore, fifty years after the establishment of the NUO and forty eight years after its demise, it is certain that one cannot conduct an objective view of this crucial organization without shedding light on these notions and their interconnecting facets to expose the various ambiguities that are often associated with the same.
Accordingly, we have chosen in this brief paper to shed light on the British role in the reform movement prior to the establishment of the NUO, in addition to the British position with respect to this organization and its respective reform demands and ultimately, the shape of the relationship between these opposing poles in particular.
